Unfortunately, due to the damn economy and all that stuff, I won't be able to make it to the playa this year. (I will still be there at heart though).
I have a tent I bought last year, and I would hate to have it go to waste. It's a 10X12 I think, pretty big, two "room". It's been playa-fied, and still has playa dust on it, even though it's been washed so many times.

Also, I am looking for a beautiful burner who is going this year to put something in the temple for me. (I believe there will still be one, correct?) Msg me and I'll give you info, as well as my gratitude, and a hug. :)

I love you all, and miss you. One day I am off work this summer, all of us must get together for lunch. I know the area pretty well now (as my job consists of a whole lot more driving than it used to) and I'm familiar with the Plano/Richardson area a whole lot more than before.
Tickets on Sale Now!

Step right up and get 'em while they're hot! Buy your Myschievia tickets at www.ntxb.org.

Tickets will cost $45 for adults, $22.50 for children ages 3-12, and 2 years and under are free. Buy yours early if you can, because the price will increase to $55 and $27.50 on September 5. Ticket sales will end at midnight on October 5.

The price has gone up by $10 due to Myschievia now lasting 5 days instead of four. The extra day costs $5 per person for the land rental fee and another $5 for insurance and portapotties. (The price increase should have happened last year when we first became a 5-day event, but we didn't realize it until after tickets had already gone on sale, and it made for a very tight budget last year.) NTXB is committed to keeping ticket prices down, so we will do all we can to continue to hold our event at this price. There are NO comp tickets (even the organizers pay), and no ticket sales at the gate.
We want to thank all Myschievians for their responses to the survey, and for the thoughtful and (mostly) respectful discussion on Tribe and on the email lists. NTXB, LLC voted 3 to 1 to allow kids at Myschievia, under the following conditions:

1) The parent or guardian must sign a waiver for their child.

2) The parent or guardian must fill out an application, similar to a theme camp application, that will detail how the child will be supervised at all times. This is primarily to ensure that the parent has thought through his or her decision, and will be mentally and physically prepared to care for the child for the duration of the event.

3) Myschievia will be zoned this year, including a Red-Light District for activities considered to be adults-only. Children under 18 will not be allowed in the Red-Light District for any reason.

4) The Rangers will have a copy of the child application on file, and will be properly trained on what to do if they see or hear about an unsupervised child. Unsupervised children (and their parents) can be evicted from the event.

We hope that these conditions will satisfy the concerns that were voiced. Traditionally, we have never had many children come to Myschievia, but the parents who choose to bring them need to be cognizant of their responsibilities -- and just as importantly, the community needs to be respectful of the parents' decision. As between any parties, any conflicts need to be brought to the Rangers for a peaceful resolution.

***************************
Theme: Burning Bridges

This year's theme and effigy will be "Burning Bridges." Simple in concept, powerful in metaphor. A large ornate bridge will represent the times we felt that a match flicked behind our back while we walked away was better than repairing the structural integrity of the relationship. Burning Bridges can symbolize not only leaving behind old relationships, but also old ways of doing things, unhealthy patterns-- it lends itself to very personal interpretations that are limited only by the participant's imagination.

When the effigy burns, colored fire will represent different types of relationships. Red will represent Love, Purple will represent Work, Green will represent Friendships, and Blue will represent Family.

The community will be invited to interact with this effigy and place burnable art on the bridge throughout the event. The landowners request that only non-toxic materials be used.

**********************

Unfortunately, spambots have taken over the wikis and we need to purge them before we can open them to volunteers. We also need to set up the email addresses for the new leads. When these things are completed, we will send out another Firecracker and let y'all know.

Alternately, if you already know the Lead you want to work with, you can always tell them. :)
Send Tidbits for the Next Firecracker

Got an event at Myschievia that you'd like to promote? Need help with a project? Send your info to geotexas (at) gmail (dot) com and we'll put it in the next issue.

I have a non-Tribe buddy preparing for his 2nd year on the playa. He has come to the realization that his wardrobe is a tad conservative.

I heartily reccomend eBay, but the trick there is to know what the shit is called. For example, searching on "really cool hippie-looking scrub-like top" may or may not locate a Dashiki.

My wife Mystical and I are a couple of virgins looking for a couple to share in gas expenses for the trip too and from BRC. We have 2 spots available in my Toyota Tacoma crew cab, which will be towing a 16 foot flat bed trailer. I’ll be the only one driving unless you are experienced in pulling a big ass trailer.

I would like to leave midday on Friday the 22 and be at the gates of BRC Monday morning. So preferably be at our house Thursday night and crash on the couch so we can have the trailer all packed up. We are still open to when we will head back. We would like to get to know you before we commit fully to sharing our ride. I think you can get a good idea of us from my photos so feel free to check them out.

We plan on seeing a few sites on the way there and back. Open to any suggestions about our route and stops, so nothing is in stone. So if you are experienced in this cross country trek that’s definitely a plus for us. Not plan on doing more than shooting a few pictures and checking things out then, back on the road again.

The route there-
Our first point of interest on the way to Burning Man is going to be the Cadillac Ranch, Amarillo, Texas where we will leave our tag on one of the old classics. It's 350.1 mi, 5hr 34min from the house to the Cadillac’s.

Our second point of interest on the way is Route 666 now known as U.S. Route 491. We hit it after exiting off of West I-40. It's 413.9 mi, 5hr 53min from the Cadillac Ranch, totaling the trip at 764 mi, 11hr 27min.

Our third point of interest on the way is Mesa Verde. It's 165.9 mi, 3hr 6min from the start of Route 666, near the town of Cortez totaling the trip at 929.9 mi, 14hr 33min.

Our fourth point of interest on the way is Arches National Park. It's 138.7 mi, 2hr 22min from Mesa Verde, near the town of Moab totaling the trip at 1068.6 mi, 15hr 55min.

Our Fifth point of interest on the way is the Bonneville Salt Flats. It's 348.1 mi, 5hr 42min from the Arches, near the Salt Lake City, Utah totaling the trip at 1416.7 mi, 21hr 37min.

The route back-
The start of our way home and first point of interest is Las Vegas The Entertainment Capital of the World. It's 492.7 mi, 7hr 42min from the town of Gerlach. We are going to crash here if we can.

Our second point of interest is the Hoover Damn. It's 30 mi, 33 min from the Las Vegas, leaving us with a total of 522.7 mi, 8hr 15min.

Our third point of interest is the Grand Canyon. It's 251.9 mi, 3 hr 56 min from the Hoover Damn, leaving us with a total of 774.6 mi, 12 hr 11 min.

Our fourth point of interest is the Barringer Meteorite Crater. It's 130.5 mi, 2 hr 6 min from the Grand Canyon, leaving us with a total of 905.1 mi, 14 hr 17 min.
I know this might seem a bit odd, but I was thinking afterwards that this could be a fun thing to do. Put on a event like that.
I would love to hear any ideas that others in the Tribe would have on this charade.
It sure would be fun.

They are looking for ppl to come perform and to attract a crowd. Even if you don't have an act please come out and support the cause. The network has been up and running for about six months and they need all the help they can get in getting the word out. I think this is an amazing service and would really like to see the Dallas burners come to Ft Worth :) I should be getting the time of the event monday and I will post the info then, I just thought I'd put feelers out there so you crazy kids could mark your calenders.

Hey gang. So I just got a giant energy bill and learned that I've been out of contract for 6 months and am being charged based on variable rate, i.e. MCPE- http://www.electricity-texas.com/MCPE-ERCOT.html which in the case of my provider (Champion) ends up being the average MCPE* plus their 5¢ per kWh fee for delivery, I guess. The bill in question shows an average rate of 15.7¢ per kWh.

I'm told that the MCPE (variable) route is historically cheaper than a fixed rate (I can get a 14.4¢ fixed rate if I apply for a 1 year contract today) and that this "spike" in pricing is atypical, yeah right.

So my questions are these:

1) Fixed or Variable? I know the obvious pros/cons, but what do you guys think, those of ya'll who don't just run away screaming?
2) Comparing prices and plans at http://www.powertochoose.org it looks like I'm on the slightly cheaper end of things already with my current provider. Anyone have a cheap provider they like?
3) I can find much of this out myself, but any quick tips on power-saving strategies? I know my attic's insulation is in dire need of updating and my roof needs attention when I get some money (wish me luck)- I also know that those double-pane energy efficient windows cost like a buttload and it would take years to even begin to make my money back. Any bright ideas?

Searchingly and Powerlessly, LOL,
Major Tom

*MCPE - Market Clearing Price for Energy
Real Time Data on MCPE Market Price for Texas

MCPE stands for Market Clearing Price for Energy and is the bare bones price that Texas companies generally use to fashion a custom tailored contract when they are buying their energy in large blocks. Essentially MCPE allows a Texas company to use the block purchase of power and then go over that purchase without penalty. The company simply pays whatever the variable market rate is at that time. The MCPE price for energy is a variable rate that changes every 15 minutes...

A relentless sonic assault on the dance floor of ferocious drums, catastrophic sub bass, and sounds from another world It is an unforgiving and punishing physical audio experience that will leave your body beat to the core and your soul wanting more.

THE ART OF FREEDOM
An Interdisciplinary Arts Conference

August 28, 2008
Black Rock City, Nevada

How can we recognize, articulate, and navigate the politics of art and freedom? What are the roles of our communities, cultures, and societies in enabling or restricting arts and freedoms? What freedoms are needed to enable artistic expression? What limitations do we struggle against to achieve artistic freedom? How can freedom be experienced as a form of art? Can art create freedom?

THE ART OF FREEDOM is an Interdisciplinary Arts Conference that will take place on August 28, 2008 in Black Rock City, Nevada at Burning Man (www.burningman.com). Scholars and creative thinkers from all levels of education and experience are invited to submit proposals for panel presentations. Conference sessions will typically consist of panels of three 20-minute paper presentations, but we are also open to proposals with creative and unusual presentation formats (feel free to think outside the box!)

Possible presentation topics might include (but are not limited to):

* Inquiries related to Art, Freedom, and the “American Dream.”
* Considerations of Burning Man and its relation to culture, society, law, or politics.
* Discussions of specific Burning Man Art installations or projects.
* Presentations on censorship in relation to artistic freedom.
* Proposals for new directions in activism related to art and freedom.
* Explorations of the relationships between subcultural expression and “mainstream” cultures.

These are just a few sample topics – we are open to considering any presentation that offers an engaged and/or creative approach to the conference theme.

The conference will be hosted by Freedomcommunity at Burning Man, and all participants should be familiar with the unique conditions of the Black Rock City environment. Note that the minimum cost for attending Burning Man is over $200, so participants should already have plans to attend the festival or should be prepared to embrace the festival in its fullness.

For more information, please contact David Higgins, Glaukopis Conference Coordinator: (glaukopisproject@gmail.com).

Abstracts of 250 words should be sent to (glaukopisproject@gmail.com) no later than June 30, 2008.

Notification will be sent regarding accepted proposals in early July.

PLEASE POST THIS CALL FOR PAPERS WIDELY! Thank you! =)

This is from our friends the Dirty Southern Burners, some whom y'all met at Flipside. Transformus is a GREAT event, and I hope they won't let the crappy year they've had destroy it. FYI Myschievia is not an "official" burn, and we prefer to remain that way. -Geo

Dear Mysterians,

It is with great sadness and discomfort that I announce Transformus is no longer an official Burning Man Regional Event. The Transformus Board of Directors received an e-mail from Andi Grace of Burning Man last night stating that there had been complaints made by the community. The decision to change Transformus' s status as an official burn was based on the BOD's lack of Civic Responsibility and Transparency. An official statement will be released from Burning Man soon entailing all of the details in depth and their reasoning. It will also lay out the process necessary to regain or retain our status as a sanctioned Regional Burn.

The Transformus BOD would like to let everyone know that at no point in time did we mean for any of this to happen. We did our best to make sense of the madness that has occurred this year leading up to Transformus 2008. We apologize to the community for our break down in communication and our botched ticketing system. We are just a group of normal people, who tried to the best of our abilities to bring you a successful event. We are only human and the lack of Civic Responsibility and Transparency was never, at any point in time, meaningfully sought out.

As many of you know, several members of the Transformus BOD have resigned. We thank them for their time, energy and devotion to this event. However, moving forward, there will be a lot of changes that will take place after Transformus 2008, and we are looking to this community to foster and implement those changes. The BOD opens the gates to the community as to where the future lies in running this event after Transformus 2008. For those of you who have wanted answers, decisions, and change, I ask you to step up to the challenge of making Transformus the way the community wants it to evolve. There are still just a few BOD members, including myself, that will help facilitate the means to making the situation at hand better after the event. Until that day and time, I respectfully and earnestly ask all of you to bring positivity and not negativity to our community.

Finally, for all of those in the community who wanted action and change, here is your opportunity to do something. The event is less than a month out ,and we can come out of the darkness and produce a great event that is fun, meaningful, transformative. ..not just a party in the woods. To all of you who are still coming and making it to Transformus 2008, we want to personally thank you for believing in the magical place known as Mysteria. Despite all the drama, anger, and confusion, we will rise to make Transformus 2008, the best one to date.

Positively Yours,

questions.. some of this stuff i don't want sms'ed to me but i could see how this could be cool...
for example tiggers comment about jet lag could wait till I lognto the computer but for example I'm off to go eat at <blank> I would want sms'ed t me cause i might be next door to that place dropping off dry cleaning or something.

So i was poking around and i see they have a feature called tracking.

If we all turn on tracking with some key word such as burnertime or somethin than those could be set to peoples phones or at least thos that chose to turn it on.

need to come up with smething that wouldn't accidentally be used.

for those that use it.. any ideas or reasons why this wouldn't work or better yet something that would work better for this?? I know Wayward mentioned dodgeball once but when I looked at it I saw something that made me think it wouldn't work but I cant remember why that is now

I've been discussing having a Circus Rampage in July, either the weekend of the 11 or the 18th.

It will be a great opportunity to share and revel in the immense talent and creativity in our group.

I am thinking visiting just a few venues, at least two of which we would stay at for a few hours and some of our rampagers will perform.

Please let me know if you are interested in performing I'm calling out a few by name, but know there are more out there: Michelle and Co., Fire Spinners, you cool people with your balls, Dee, Wayward, Smurfette, LolliBombs, Hoopers, AND if you have inside contacts for possible venues.

IF YOU LIVE IN DALLAS:

There is serious legislation being considered about population control for dogs and breeding rights. If you are interested, please read the attached that I received today from the AKC. IF YOU OWN A DOG THAT IS NOT SPAYED OR NEUTERED - THIS CONCERNS YOU IF YOU ARE A DALLAS CITY RESIDENT!!!!

The Dallas City Council will consider proposed changes to the Dallas animal control ordinance on Wednesday, June 18th, at 9:00 AM, at Dallas City Hall, 1500 Marilla Street, Dallas. These changes include mandatory spay/neuter, breeder permitting, and limits on the number of pets that can be owned. It is vitally important that Dallas-area responsible dog breeders and owners express their opposition via calls, mailed letters, and faxes, and attend the hearing to show opposition to the ordinance.

The American Kennel Club opposes the concepts of breeding permits, breedings bans, or the mandatory spay/neuter of purebred dogs. Instead, we support reasonable and enforceable laws that protect the health and welfare of purebred dogs and do not restrict the rights of breeders and owners who take their responsibilities seriously.

Unfortunately, the proposed draconian changes to Dallas’ animal control ordinances conflict with the positions stated above. For example, the proposed changes would:

Require Dallas dog owners to spay or neuter each dog they own. The AKC believes that mandatory spay/neuter is an ineffective solution to animal control problems because it fails to address the heart of animal control issues—irresponsible ownership. Mandatory spay/neuter laws are extremely difficult to enforce and can be evaded by irresponsible animal owners who do not license their pets. More laws, rules, and regulations increase the workload of already financially strained animal control offices, making it even more difficult for them to perform their duties.

To keep a dog intact, breeders are required to purchase a $500 breeder permit for each intact dog every year. However, breeder licensing fees place an undue burden on responsible breeders and owners and fail to address irresponsible individuals who neither comply with existing law nor will comply with new laws. Such fees therefore punish responsible breeders who give the care and attention that puppies need in order to grow into healthy, well-adjusted companions and neighbors. Responsible local breeders encourage responsible dog ownership and should be viewed as assets to their communities and should not be subjected to punitive fees.
Impose a limit on the number of pets owned to six dogs or cats (or combination of both) per dwelling. However, limit laws are easily evaded, difficult to enforce, and fail to address the actions of irresponsible owners. In the alternative to limit laws, effective enforcement of existing leash and curbing laws, rather than passage of burdensome new laws, will prevent pet owners from allowing their animals to run loose.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

First, it is imperative that all Dallas-area residents call and fax Mayor Tom Leppert and the members of the Dallas City Council (contact information below) to respectfully let them know that you OPPOSE the proposed changes to Dallas’s animal ordinance.

Second, attend the Dallas City Council’s meeting on Wednesday, June 18th (9:00 AM, at Dallas City Hall, 1500 Marilla Street, Dallas). Show—and, if allowed testify, respectfully express—your opposition to the proposed ordinance change.
Be forewarned though, I might have to take Starla, in case her grandparents don't want to watch her overnight. But, by the time they make it back here in Krum in late June, I am sure they will undertstand that I need a seriuos mommy break and they will be more than willing to do it.
Afterall, they are the major reason why I am here for the summer....I could have taken classes in ST Louis if I petitioned TWU.
Emarie will be with her family in Idaho for July, so no cool 7 year old that many of you have not seen in 2 years.

So, who is in? WIll there be other parents wanting to bring their little burners?
I will get back on the dates, cuz' I want to do it when (Gregor) Poppins will be here.

see all of you at Corp 40z. I can only stay till midnight, so if you wanna see me make it before 12.
